Malta – A safe bet for travellers

Thursday, 16 October 2008 12:00 AM

A recent report has named Malta as one of the safest holiday destinations in the world. The report also goes on to praise the island’s roads which have the lowest fatality rate in the EU.

Malta’s police force, one of the oldest in the world is notably proud of the island’s low crime statistics especially given its close proximity to Sicily.

There are however many more reasons for visiting Malta, one such reason is the weather. Malta benefits from a Mediterranean climate. The azure blue seas tend to be 64 degrees during the autumn and winter months, whilst summer sees it peak at around 79 degrees. Humidity levels tend to stay at around 70% making it comfortable for sightseeing no matter what time of year you visit.

Malta is home to some of the oldest freestanding monuments in the world. In AD60 St Paul was shipwrecked at the place now known as St Paul’s Bay. Valetta although relatively modern as capital cities go, (it was rebuilt after the Great Siege of Malta in 1565) still has plenty to offer plenty to interest visitors wanting to soak up the islands rich cultural history. Valetta is built on top of Mount Sceberras which affords magnificent views from the fortifications of the old city and the fort of St Elmo.

But for all its history the island is not stuck in the past. Over recent years a vibrant clubbing scene has emerged. Paceville (pronounced Patchy Ville in Malta) is generally regarded as Malta’s nightlife capital, a suburb of St Julian’s it is known for it’s energetic & lively clubs with pumping sounds, that will appeal to the young and young at heart. Events also take place at the limits of Rabat and dedicated clubbers converge on the island every year for the Cream nights that take place during the summer and on New Years Eve in the islands largest open air club ‘Gianpula’.

The Island’s other resorts, Medina, Gozo and Sliema to name but a few are all popular destinations with plenty to offer holidaymakers looking for a well earned break in the sun. Holidays to Malta can be booked at Holiday Hypermarket.
