easyJet has announced the launch of its first ever services from London Gatwick to Bergen – also known as the ‘Gateway to the Fjords’ – in Norway.

The new route will commence on Monday May 20th 2013.

Norway will be the 33rd country easyJet flies to with the airline expecting to carry more than 100,000 passengers between Norway and the UK annually.

Renowned for its coastal splendour and set against the dramatic backdrop of the city’s seven mountains, Bergen is an outdoor lover’s haven and provides a wealth of sightseeing opportunities around the Fjords and beyond, which encompass a vibrant music and arts scene along with historical monuments and architectural gems such as the city’s Hanseattic Wharf and museum.

Speaking at Bergen Airport, easyJet’s UK Director – Paul Simmons said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be announcing the launch of flights to Norway today. This is the first time easyJet has offered flights to Norway and Bergen is a fantastic city – often referred to as the Gateway to the Fjords – and I’m sure it will be a popular route with our passengers.

“The addition of Bergen will see easyJet flying more than half a million passengers between the UK and Scandinavia, and will take the total number of routes served from Gatwick to 101 across 27 countries. We very much look forward to welcoming our first passengers from Norway onboard our flights in May.”

Mayor of Bergen Mrs Trude Drevland welcomed the announcement: “We are very pleased that easyJet is starting up Bergen – London. Bergen is well known as the Gateway to the Fjords of Norway and we are looking forward to welcoming thousands of tourists to our beautiful region.”

This announcement comes just a month after easyJet announced increased services between London Gatwick and Denmark’s capital city Copenhagen, from three to four each day. The airline’s new flights to Bergen will mean that easyJet flies to two Scandinavian cities from four destinations in the UK – London Gatwick, Bristol, Edinburgh and Manchester.

Fares on the new route between London Gatwick and Bergen will be from £35.49 one way including taxes.
