Learn a new language during a gap year

written by Dan Casper March 19, 2016

Learn a new language during a gap year

Speaking a foreign language fluently can be an incredibly useful skill to have. Not only will it make you a more attractive candidate when applying for jobs, but it will also allow you to more fully enjoy yourself when travelling to places where that language is commonly spoken.

In addition, the ability to speak and read another language will give you access to an entirely new culture – such as the books, music, movies and food – and it could change the way you see the world.

Some research has even shown that those who learn a new dialect also improve their maths and English skills.

Whatever your motivation, if you've ever dreamed of conversing in a different language, then a gap year with Inspired Breaks could be the key to making your multilingual aspirations a reality!

Immerse yourself in a new language and culture

Many believe that one of the best ways to learn a language is by total immersion. That is, going to a place where the language is spoken and surrounding yourself with the local people and culture.

And that's exactly what happens on the language school gap years provided by Inspired Break. Our language learning abroad programmes will give you the unique opportunity to study a foreign tongue with a one-on-one tutor and interact on a daily basis with those who speak the dialect.

You can opt for the experience to last anywhere from one week to two months and you may even earn a certificate if you complete a certain number of hours of tuition.

Cross the Atlantic and learn Espanol!

If you'd like to learn Spanish abroad, then a trip to Central or South America could be the perfect choice.

For example, you could travel to Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Located in the northern part of the country and about 25 kilometres north of the equator, it's surrounded by stunning jungle-covered mountains and the city is ripe for exploration.

Costa Rica is another destination to consider. Students will travel to Heredia, which is known as the city of flowers and located ten kilometres from the capital San Jose.

You could also venture to Antigua in Guatemala. A destination famous for its gorgeous Baroque architecture, Antigua has been named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and could be an inspiring location for anyone wanting to master a foreign tongue.

Start planning your gap year with Inspired Breaks

Here at Inspired Breaks, we can help you find a gap year trip that matches your specific requirements – whether you want a break from your career, to learn a new skill, make a difference in another community, or simply to visit somewhere off the beaten track.

Whichever gap year activity you decide to participate in, you'll get the chance to experience life in another country.

During your travels, you will stay with a host family and share two meals a day with them, giving you the opportunity to practice your new language skills, get to know them and maybe even establish new friendships.

In addition, the flexible class times will give you plenty of opportunities to explore your surroundings.
