More ski and snowboarders travelling without insurance

Have you got adequate travel insurance for your ski holiday?

Have you got adequate travel insurance for your ski holiday?

ABTA – The Travel Association today has revealed that the number of skiers and snowboarders travelling without adequate winter sports travel insurance has increased.

Research shows that over a third (36 per cent) of Brits taking a winter sports holiday now go without purchasing specific winter sports insurance, an increase from 30 per cent in 2012. The number rises to nearly half (47 per cent) of under 35s, the age group most likely to take a winter sports break.

This news comes as winter sports holidays are seeing a real boost in popularity; ABTA research shows that 15 per cent of those taking a winter holiday are planning to take a winter sports holiday, an increase from 10 per cent in 2012. Additionally skiers can look forward to a bumper season as early snow has allowed resorts all over Europe and North America to open ahead of schedule. Many Brits may also be inspired to take a winter sports break by the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

By travelling without adequate insurance, skiers and snowboarders are putting themselves at risk of sky high medical bills should they have an accident or injury on the slopes.

Victoria Bacon, ABTA Head of Communications said: “It is great to see winter sports holidays continuing to grow in popularity and we would urge anyone planning a winter sports holiday to make sure that they have specific insurance. Unfortunately accidents can happen and can lead to costly medical bills, but having the right kind of cover means people can make the most of their time on the slopes without having to worry.”
