Welcome In The Summer With a Stay In The Lake District

written by Dan Casper May 18, 2017

Summer is the perfect season to enjoy the sunshine and the long hours of daylight; finally saying goodbye the dullness of the winter months. With the arrival of the better weather comes the excitement of making plans with your family and friends, giving you the opportunity to get out and about. While the UK isn’t particularly renowned for its brilliant summer weather, we’re still blessed with patches of real summer weather every now and again. So, if you’re wondering what to do with your summer, let Inn on the Square give you a little inspiration.

With the summer solstice occurring on 21st June this year, you may want to plan a trip to celebrate the longest day of the year, and a return of the good weather. To really take advantage of the summer this year, why not consider one of the UK’s most beautiful destinations? The Lake District is an area full of natural beauty and plenty of things to keep you entertained; a no-brainer for your next family or friend adventure.

Historical Sites To Visit

There is a seemingly never-ending list of things to see in the Lake District, especially in the summer when the area really comes into its own. Whether you’re with the kids or you just fancy learning about the area’s history yourself, there are several historical sites to visit.

Castlerigg Stone Circle is potentially one of the earliest in the country of its kind, having been constructed sometime around 3000 BC. A Neolithic monument, it was most likely a meeting place for the communities.

There are also numerous abbeys and castles, as well as remnants of Roman forts to explore, should you wish a day out of discovering England’s history.

Cultural Activities

Of course, you don’t have to spend all your time in the Lake District walking around mountains or looking at ruins. There are a number of other things to do too, such as the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick. Sitting on the shores of Derwentwater, it has been open since 1999.

You can also visit the birthplace and childhood home of William Wordsworth in Cockermouth. It is presented as it would have been back in the 1770s, with a programme of displays that changes regularly!
