Walking holidays in the Azores

Friday, 9 July 2010 12:00 AM

If you’re looking for a vacation that allows you to take in some spectacular scenery while indulging in gentle exercise, a walking holiday in the Azores could be the break that you’ve always been dreaming of.

Whether you’re an experienced hiker or are taking your first walking holiday, the Portuguese archipelago – located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean – is sure to be an ideal destination.

The Azores consist of nine main islands and by taking a walking holiday in the region, you will be able to take in its dramatic natural scenery.

However, one place you should be sure to visit while on a hiking holiday in the region is Sao Miguel. This is the largest island in the archipelago, so there is bound to plenty of paths and trails for you to explore.

From dynamic valleys and crystal blue lakes like Lagoa Azul, to majestic mountains and plains, the diverse landscape is certain to offer you something new to look at every turn. Be sure pack your camera with you on your walking holiday for some mementos of your Sunvil Discovery experience.

If you’ve gone on a walking holiday to the Azores in order to blow off a little steam, you should check out the numerous hot mineral springs and geysers that can be found throughout the islands.

However, there are plenty of other places to explore while on a hiking holiday in the archipelago. Why not visit the islands of Santa Maria and Sao Jorge? Although they are both smaller than Sao Miguel, their scenery will be no less dramatic.

And with the islands’ mild temperatures meaning that fields and hedges come alive with flora during the spring and summer, gardening enthusaits may want to stop for a second on their walking holiday to stop and smell the flowers.

Of course, walking holidays in the Azores do not all have to be spent on terra firma. Why not take a break from hiking and splash around in the sea? There will be the opportunity to bathe in the clear blue waters that surround the islands, ideal if you’re looking to cool down from a strenuous morning’s hike.

No matter what your level of fitness is, a walking holiday to the Azores is sure to be a holiday experience that will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
