Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary which spans an area of 6.2 sq km and is one of the few urban-protected areas in the world. The sanctuary, which was established in 1985 and officially protected in 1998, is located at the end of Dubai Creek and preserves the natural ecosystem of the region. It has been identified as a globally important Bird Area by Birdlife International.
Some of the birds that nest in this sanctuary include: Greater Flamingo , Broad-billed Sandpiper , Black-winged stilt , Crab Plover , Hume's Wheatear , Indian Roller , Res-wattled Lapwing ,Yellow Warbler , European Bee-eater , Blue-checked Bee-eater , Little Green Bee-Eater , Purple Sunbird and Hoopoe Lark.
