Located off the northwestern coast of Africa, the Canary Islands are one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, to people from the UK, Ireland and Germany with more than 10 million people visiting the Islands in total. Some of the biggest attractions of the Canary Islands are the warm sunny weather all year round, duty free prices and its great beaches considered as one of the best in Europe.
There are seven main islands forming the Canaries and these are from west to east - El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. There are some smaller islands including Isla Graciosa, Isla de Alegranza and Isla de MontaƱa Clara.
There are vast volcanic craters, spectacular black beaches, ancient forests and crystal clear waters inhabited by whales and dolphins. Nature lovers find in the Canary Islands a paradise of quieter islands.
By far the most popular holiday playgrounds are Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Away from the resorts however these islands, ironically, also offer the most varied landscapes. Next in popularity come Lanzarote, the Fuerteventura.
Some interesting attractions in Lanzarote you should see are:
Timanfaya National Park: It is the main attraction to visit in Lanzarote. This massive Volcano erupted in 1730 and lasted 6 years till 1736.
Cueva de los Verdes - The Green Caves: Is part of the same underground volcanic tubes as the Jameos del Agua and were formed by the eruptions of the volcano de la Corona.
Cesar Manrique: Was born in 1919 in Puerto Naos Arrecife and is the person responsible for shaping the Island as it is today. His house in which people can visit is built in to the lava.
Jameos Del Agua: is located in the north of Lanzarote (next to the Green Caves) and is a tourist attraction which was formed by lava bubbles.
Lanzarote has managed to combine modern resorts with much-praised eco-friendly development and low-rise aesthetically pleasing design, while Fuerteventura is famous for its wind-driven watersports and some of Europe's finest beaches.
Another relevant event in the Canary Islands is its carnival celebrated in February.
