See the wonder of Norway on a cruise

With its rich Viking past and spectacular natural scenery, Norway should be on any traveller's to-do list.

If you are heading to the Scandinavian country, why not take a cruise so you can see as many of the sights as possible?

Cunard cruise deals can be located online - and the company suggests that Scandinavia is an area "steeped in beauty, mythology and antiquity".

Some of the reasons people should head to Norway on a cruise, according to Cunard, are to see the "unequalled splendour of the Norwegian fjords" or to visit the "captivating" capital city of Oslo.

These are all worthy motivations to visit the country, but there are a plethora of other reasons to take a trip to the northern edge of Europe.

Capital gains

Oslo is a common stop-off point on a tour of Norway - it is the capital city after all!

Located between the Oslo Fjord and the greener surroundings of Oslomarka, the city is a hotbed for fine dining and cultural delights.

Visit Oslo says that it is the combination of city life and close proximity to outdoor activities that makes the capital "a unique destination" for visitors.

Some of the top attractions in Oslo include Akershus Fortress and the TusenFryd Amusement Park, while those who want to get into the psyche of the nation they are visiting may wish to check out the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History.

Natural wonders

There are four fjord regions in western Norway that are worth investigating - More & Romsdal, Sogn & Fjordane, Hordaland and Rogaland. However, there are fjords in other parts of the country too.

Two specific fjords that are not to be missed are Geirangerfjord and Naeroyfjord, which are so awe-inspiring they have been labelled as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Whatever you have experienced on cruise holidays in the past is unlikely to prepare you for the sight of the huge waterways - created when Ice Age glaciers moved, leaving behind giant chasms filled with water.

The bigger picture

Whether you are on a last minute cruise or one that has been booked up for months in advance, a trip to Norway will offer plenty to the discerning traveller.

There is the chance to experience the northern lights or safaris where you can spot whales and eagles. The Northern Cape is the northernmost point of mainland Europe too, giving you the chance to effectively stand on top of the world.
