There are lots of fascinating things to see during a break in Barcelona, but few are as beautiful as the Magic Fountain of Montjuic.
Situated within easy walking distance of many of the Catalan city's holiday apartments, the fountain is located close to the many tourist attractions of the Montjuic district, such as the Palau Nacional.
As the name suggests, the Magic Fountain of Montjuic is no ordinary water feature - it is a genuine work of art.
With a spectacularly ambitious design by Carlos Buigas, the illuminated fountain was built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition and soon became one of the city's main talking points.
It was badly damaged during the Spanish Civil War and was not returned to working order until 1955. A range of improvement work has since been carried out on the Magic Fountain and its water jets and lights are more spectacular than ever.
During its last major restoration, ahead of the 1992 Olympics, music was added to the stunning light show and the fountain is now a major tourist attraction.
Shows featuring a range of classical and contemporary music and film scores now take place on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights during the summer and on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the rest of the year.
A trip to see one of the shows will certainly play a part in a memorable and very different night out during your holiday in the Catalan city.
Barcelona is the perfect place for a short break, as it has plenty of good-quality city apartments to stay in, together with a fine selection of bars and restaurants, and lots to see.
You are sure to want to experience the bustling atmosphere of Las Ramblas, to visit La Sagrada Familia and Antoni Gaudi's other stunning works, and to take a trip to the home of FC Barcelona.
There are also plenty of fascinating attractions on Montjuic, including the National Art Museum of Catalonia, Poble Espanyol, many of the venues used for the 1992 Olympics, a museum dedicated to the works of Joan Miro and some immaculate gardens.
Walking to the top of Montjuic will also give you a spectacular view over Barcelona, but if you don't fancy trekking up the hill, you can take the funicular railway or gondola lift to the summit.
