The Cap de Formentor forms the eastern end of Majorca's Formentor peninsula and provides some of the most spectacular views in the region.
Known as the meeting point of the winds, huge cliffs jut into the sea and shelter hidden sandy coves, strange rock formations and mystical caves.
The area boasts a range of accommodation options including
villas with private tennis courts and
quality Mallorcan villas.
Step back in time
The Cap de Formentor's winds have been named by locals for centuries and they form an integral part of the area's history - they are called Tramuntana, Ponenet, Migjom and Llevant, and the wind's cousins are named Gregal, Llebetx, Xaloc, Mestral.
Wind has been essential for the island's fishing and for the agricultural trade and visitors can stand on the peninsula and experience their battering strength while watching the waves crash against the rocks below.
The Italian engineer Antonio Paretti built the snake road from the Cap de Formentoe to San Calobra and the 13.5 kilometre road from Port de Pollenca. They are described as two silk ribbons weaving through the cliffs. Visitors walking along them will be met by spectacular views and breathtaking scenery.
Poet Miquel i Llobera once owned the area and it is easy to see why he chose the area as his inspiration.
After Miquel's death it was sold and soon became the haunt of the rich and famous when the exclusive Hotel Formentor was built in 1928.
Beautiful views and sandy beaches
Visitors to
Mallorca can walk along the cliff path, which has been cut out of the rock, to the lighthouse that dates back to 1892. Surrounded by rare and protected plants, the spot is a great place to admire the area's beauty.
Views along the headland are incredible with a number of different vantage points where people can gaze out at the ocean, including the Mirador del Mal Pas where Menorca is illuminated in the east, Alcudia and its sandy beaches can be found to the south and Cala Fiquerea is in the west.
The nearby Formentor beach, once exclusively for residents of the Hotel Formentor, is a great place to relax in the sun and the nearby bays Cala Fiquera, Cala Murta and Cala Pi de la Posada are also lovely to visit.
