  • Birds

Point Pelee National Park in Ontario is a naturalist’s paradise, particularly during the migration in spring and autumn, with over 700 kinds of plants and around 350 species of birds recorded. Much further north and west at Little Slave Lake north of Edmonton, the song bird migration is awesome. Newfoundland, the ‘seabird capital’ of the world, offers fantastic opportunities for the avid wildlife and bird watcher. Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is home to North America’s largest Atlantic Puffin and Black legged kittiwake colonies, and St Mary’s Ecological Reserve has Northern Gannets.Click here for more information
  • Bears

The magnificent grizzly bears once roamed much of North America west of the Mississippi, but are now almost entirely confined to the Canadian North, British Columbia and Alaska, feeding on salmon, plants and berries. Click here for more information
  • Wolves

The wolf is one of the world's most notorious animals, both love and (wrongly) feared. Because of its high intelligence, adaptability and great skill in hunting, it has historically lived in every type of surroundings in the northern hemisphere except for the desert. Around 50-60,000 wolves inhabit Canada, the second largest population in the world after the former Soviet Union. Click here for more information
  • Moose

This horse-sized animal is the largest member of the deer family with long, dark brown hair, high, humped shoulders and long ears. A pendant of hair-covered skin sometimes reaching 2 feet hands under the throat. Each April the male moose or bull grows a set pof antlers reaching 120-150 cm which he loses in the winter after rutting season. Moose can be found across Canada, particularly in the Matane Wildlife Reserve, Quebec. Click here for more information

  • Sea Otters

These enchanting whiskered creatures of the ocean are a treat to see, and like many treats are a little hard to come by. Having been nearly extinct, they can now be seen off the weat coast of Vancouver Island, sometimes in Tofino, but more often in the north at Brooks Peninsula Provincial Park (a stubby nine-mile finger of land that juts out into the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of Vancouver Island, northwest of Kyuquot). • Whales

More than 33 species of whale live in Canada’s three oceans, and you can watch them from small zodiacs, sailing boats, comfortable cruisers and, in Newfoundland, even from the shore. The distinctive black and white orca or killer whales live in the Pacific Ocean off Vancouver Island. Marine wildlife day trips run from Victoria at any time of the year, with whale watching from 1 April to 31 October. The glorious waters of the Johnston Strait between the island and the main coast are home to nearly 300 of these majestic and playful creatures from late June to October. Half and full day trips operate from Sayward and Telegraph Cove, taking you into the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. Click here for more information
