British Airways is the first UK airline to take delivery of the long range Boeing 777-300ER, the latest evolution in aircraft technology that is said to be quieter and more fuel efficient.
At 242ft, the B777-300ER is 11ft longer than a B747 and 32ft longer than a B777-200 and is one of six ordered by British Airways.
It is the world's largest twinjet with seating for over 300 passengers and has a range from 5,235 to 9,380 nautical miles (9,695 to 17,370 km) depending on the model.
CO2 emissions are claimed to be 23 per cent lower per seat than the B 747-400.
Willie Walsh, British Airways' chief executive, said: "Our first Boeing 777-300ER aircraft reflects our continued commitment to deliver the best travel experience to customers.
"It is the aircraft first to be fitted out with our new World Traveller and World Traveller Plus cabins, with new in-flight entertainment systems providing customers with 50 per cent more choice on movies and doubling the range of TV and music options.
"We will add two more B777-300s by the end of this year, and three more by early 2012. All these new aircraft generate significantly less CO2 emissions per seat than their predecessors and reinforce British Airways' commitment to reduce its carbon footprint."
New seating in new World Traveller and World Traveller Plus will enhance the traveling experience for customers, who will also benefit from new soft furnishings and in-seat power sockets.
