Las Vegas was the number one holiday destination for our athletes
British Airways have asked a number of Team GB and Paralympics GB athletes about their holiday plans post September, to find out where our athletes head when it's time to relax.
Las Vegas proved to be the number one destination for athletes following the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games; according to the airline research nearly a third of Team GB are planning a trip to America this September.
Triathlete athlete Helen Jenkins, who is one of the many athletes drawn to the infamous Sin City, explained its appeal: “My husband and I Iove Vegas and cannot wait to return. The weather is always great, and there’s always something going on. I’m not surprised it’s popular with the athletes as we’ve all trained so hard for so long - it provides the perfect antidote to get away from it all.”
Proving that Team GB is just like the rest of us, Spain was also a hugely popular destination - coming in second place closely behind the USA with 13 per cent of athletes planning a break to the mainland and its islands. Ibiza proved particularly popular, suggesting that athletes really do want sun, sea and parties from their holiday breaks.
Australia, Greece and Thailand were in joint third place – preferred destinations for their sunshine, beaches, sports activities, great food and culture.
Some of the more unusual destinations included: Lithuania, Cuba and the less far-flung - Scotland! The findings also revealed that there’s no rest for some athletes, with four per cent planning an active ski or snowboarding holiday.
British Airways is airline partner of Team GB and ParalympicsGB.
