Whilst Americans are flocking to London for the 2012 Olympic Games, we Brits are heading to America – the number one destination for travellers looking to escape London in July and August.

New York is the most popular searched for destination for UK travellers this summer, according to data from the travel search site Kayak. They revealed that 3.7 per cent of holiday searches for dates coinciding with the Olympic Games were for the Big Apple.

Ironically, the news comes after it was revealed that the number one nationality travelling into the UK for the 2012 Games is America.

The ever-popular Spain also appears to be faring well with travellers who don’t want to put up with crowds this July – proving that Brits still crave a traditional beach holiday in the summer months, no matter what is happening on their home soil.

Three of the top five getaway destinations were in Spain; Brits are chasing the sun in Ibiza, Malaga and Barcelona.
