The ships 34 sails could cover a football pitch
The second largest sailing ship in the world is set to visit London this summer for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Kruzenshtern is 114.5 metres long and 62 metres high, with 34 sails that would cover a football pitch. The Russian four-masted barque was originally built in 1926.
Members of the public will be able to take tours of the ship when it docks in London at Wood Wharf, Docklands, between July 27th and August 10th 2012 - just in time for the Olypic Games.
Tours will include the upper deck, museum, Orthodox temple, crew cabin, engine room, steering wheel, and photographs with the 150 strong crew.
Alternatively, people can admire theKruzenshtern from the dockside.
Gareth Stephens, Docklands harbour and waterspace manager at British Waterways, said: “We are very excited to be welcoming theKruzenshtern to London this summer. She is a unique vessel and I can’t wait to see her sailing down the Thames on 27 July.
"Docklands is going to be a fantastic place to visit this summer. The docks will be full of a whole range of vessels, from the graceful Kruzenshtern to the cruise liner MS Deutschland, the biggest boat ever known to have visited Docklands. Boating enthusiasts, families and anyone looking for something a little bit different should come down and take a look.”
On her way to and from London, the Kruzenshtern will moor at Southend-on-Sea, where she will offer four hour sailing tours. The tours will include opening all the sails, an entertainment and musical programme and lunch.
A 30 minute tour of the vessel costs from £5 to £15.
