Cancun is a luxury holiday hotspot
Virgin Atlantic is set to introduce a non-stop service from London Gatwick to Cancun next summer.
The airline will offer twice-weekly flights to the popular holiday destination, which is located on Mexico's Caribbean coast, from June 12th 2012.
Some 94,000 travellers are expected to use the route in its first year.
The addition of Cancun boosts Virgin Atlantic's leisure network from London Gatwick, with several popular destinations in America and the Caribbean - such as Barbados, Las Vegas, Jamaica and Orlando - already served from the airport.
Airline president Sir Richard Branson said many passengers have asked for the introduction of direct flights to the destination over the years.
He added: "With its superb beaches, great hotels and cultural sites, tourism in Cancun is thriving. We believe that we can drive demand ever higher by providing great competition to our rivals with our award-winning product and service.
"Cancun is one of the top five long-haul leisure destinations for UK travellers, so we are delighted to be able to add this route to [our] network."
Amanda Wills, managing director of Virgin Holidays, also revealed that the company will be launching its first ever dedicated Mexico brochure in July.
