Passengers are no longer likely to get the benefit of the doubt concerning baggage size with Ryanair. Staff members employed by handling firm Servisair are to be given 50p for every oversized hand-luggage they spot, according to reports.

However, that payment will only come into force if an employee reaches a target of 10 bags a week.

The arrangements have been put in place at John Lennon Airport, Liverpool, and mean that staff will be paying extra attention to passengers’ hand luggage.

Ryanair’s terms and conditions state that extra/oversized cabin baggage will be refused at the boarding gate, or where available, placed in the hold of the aircraft for a fee of £40.

Only passengers with a bag weighing over 10kg (and over the maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm) will be charged and told to put their luggage in the hold.
