UK train company GNER is the most cycle-friendly long-distance service operator in Europe, a new study shows.

The east coast mainline operator, which serves routes from London to Edinburgh among others, was ranked higher Swiss Railways, Germany's Deutsche Bahn, France's TGV service.

The survey by the European Cyclists' Federation evaluated 32 European train operators on their availability of cycle spaces, how cycle-friendly the ticket booking and purchasing systems were, and how good their websites were for information on travelling with a bike.

"There are bike racks at every GNER station and provision has increased in recent years. Passengers can also take their bikes on our trains free of charge provided they book a space before departure," said Michelle Drage, GNER commercial director.
