Take the family to Antarctica

There are a plethora of reasons why Antarctica is the ideal destination for a great family active holiday, not least the fact that adults and children alike will marvel at the beautiful wildlife - such as whales - that call this part of the world home.

Indeed, the world's coldest continent is the perfect place for creatures including penguins, seals, whales and dolphins to take advantage of the more than 100 species of fish found here, as well as the mile upon mile of landscape that provides ample space for breeding.

Should mums and dads want their kids to discover the world on family breaks with a difference, they should look no further than the Antarctic.

Youngsters who like to get stuck into adventures will find everything they need on the continent for a trip of a lifetime.

One of the most memorable experiences for little ones will no doubt be getting the chance to capture on film some of the millions of penguins that splash about and breed in the Antarctic.

The main species that are likely to be spotted are the majestic Emperor penguins and the smaller Adelie breed. Whether feeding their young on land or swimming in the water, penguins certainly make for the perfect photo opportunity.

Another animal that is awe-inspiring when seen up close is the whale. Parents and children might race to see who will be the first to spot the mighty creature rising out of the ocean, thumping its body down on to the waves, certainly causing a splash!

Fur and elephant seals breed in dense colonies on the continent and, if you go on an adventure holiday in the Antarctic in spring, you are likely to catch a glimpse of these creatures breeding on the ice.

Taking excursions in small boats to the huge glacier faces might also afford the family a chance to see another resident - the dolphin. These friendly creatures often like to chase boats and jump out of the waves, much to the delight of passengers.

When on family activity holidays here, you will be struck by the dazzling white landscape that shines even more brightly underneath the clear blue sky.

You will have the opportunity to discover the scenery away from the main vessel and appreciate its remoteness, providing you with beautiful peace and quiet and quality time together as a family.

One excursion that could be on your itinerary is a trip to Deception Island. This mass of land is actually a flooded volcano cone and if you dig a hole in the black volcanic sand, you can create your own heated spa pool.

Steaming water will soon flow into the gap you have created, enabling you to lie back, relax and take in the scenery that you otherwise might have only ever gotten the chance to see on TV.

The truly adventurous among you can take a quick dip in the icy sea before rushing back to the haven of their steam pool to warm themselves up.

For a holiday that will be interesting and engaging for all members of the family, the Antarctic has it all. From beautiful wildlife such as penguins and dolphins to breathtaking scenery including glaciers, trips to this part of the world will certainly create memories that will last a lifetime.
