If you're trying to find the ideal destination for last minute holidays combining natural wonders and architectural treasures, why not consider Sri Lanka? This stunning island is awash with amazing sights to see.

Indeed, home to no less than eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, the isle is certainly one that will keep you occupied.

And if it's natural wonders that particularly pique your interest, you might want to kick off your cheap Sri Lanka holiday with a trip to the Sinharaja Forest - a UNESCO World Heritage Wilderness Area.

This amazing tropical rainforest is simply teeming with life, from rare plants to over 100 bird species and animals such as the ruddy mongoose, elephant and leopard.

And this isn't the only UNESCO-status ecological site you can explore on the island. The amazing Central Highlands are another must. Sitting some 2,500 metres above sea level, it is home to a number of endangered species - such as the Horton Plains slender loris - as well as countless endemic flora and fauna.

You'll also have plenty of choice when it comes to exploring the region's architectural treasures. Spots such as the Golden Temple of Dambulla are particularly popular with tourists and pilgrims alike.

Within these caves, you'll find murals detailing the life of Buddha dating back some 2,000 years. However, to get to the site you will need to walk the 100 metres above plain-level barefoot - something that is an experience in itself.

Once you arrive, you'll be well rewarded for you efforts with the sight of these huge and endlessly impressive frescoes.

Another great place to visit during your trip is the Scared Temple of the Tooth, which is situated in Kandy. This structure plays host to a sacred relic of Lord Buddha - said to be the most treasured on the island.

However, the temple itself is not the only thing to see here. The impressive royal complex surrounds it, while dotted through the neighbouring hills you'll notice an array of other small temples, each displaying uniquely fascinating architecture.

Wherever you choose to visit during your Sri Lanka holiday, you certainly won't be short of amazing places to see and memorable experiences to have.
