Ideal Cornish cottages by the sea

If you're thinking of booking last minute cottages in Cornwall for a short-notice holiday, you might be wondering which area is best to stay in for a beachside break.

Why not consider the picturesque spot of Port Issac for your getaway? This little fishing village is the ideal place for a relaxing holiday by the sea.

The hamlet boasts both coastal and countryside scenery which you may have spotted if you have ever watched the ITV series Doc Martin, for which the location was used as the backdrop.

Well-placed for exploring the surrounding areas, from Port Issac you might like to travel to the cliff-top ruins of Tintagel Castle - rumoured to have been used King Arthur - or take a stroll around Pencarrow House and Gardens to admire the landscaped lawns, porcelain and pictures.

The location is home to a popular shanty group called The Fisherman's Friends, which provides entertainment every Friday, so why not enjoy some freshly caught seafood and take in a performance?

Another great spot for cottages by the sea is the small resort of Bude. The town is full of character, boasting many notable buildings such as St Olaf's church and the parish church of St Michael and All Angels, as well as Bude Castle - which is now a heritage centre.

If you're hoping to spend some time on the sand then you'll find yourself well catered for as Bude has a number of good beaches, two of which are within the town itself. A little further afield is the shingle Sandymouth Bay, owned by the National Trust. Here you can take in stunning cliff and rock formations. Widemouth Bay, meanwhile, is not far away and boasts lovely sands if you want to kick back and relax.

Many of the beaches in the area are ideal for surfing if you feel like getting active during your break.

Alternatively, you might decide to head to the quaint town of Mullion on the Lizard peninsula. Here you can enjoy wandering around art galleries and craft shops, as well as admire the 15th century church of St Mellanus.

Home to a working harbour, you're sure to want to sample some of the area's seafood during your stay, as well as pay a visit to the beach at Polurrian. Stretch your legs along the cliff-top route or follow the path through the valley to reach your destination, enjoying the fresh air and scenery while you're at it.
