If you're thinking about learning how to surf, there is no need to venture to the coasts of America or Australia - you can enjoy a brilliant time in the waves right here in the UK.

Newquay in Cornwall is considered to be the surfing capital of Europe and you'll find this is one of the best places to test your skills at this popular ocean sport.

With some of the best surfing schools around and numerous world-class instructors to choose from, you are sure to have an exhilarating experience out on your board during your cottage holiday in Cornwall.

Surfing is a way of life in this part of the UK and there are several well-respected surfing schools on hand to get you feeling comfortable in the water. Among the most popular schools for all ages and abilities are the Reef Surfing School at Great Western Beach and the Atlantic Coastsurf School on Henver Road.

Both are located within easy reach of beach holiday homes in the area.

Once you've mastered the basics on your board, you'll want to get out and about to explore Newquay's most famous beaches. There is truly something for everyone here - whether you're looking for a beginner-friendly beach or a more challenging area of surf, you'll find exactly what you're looking for on the Cornish coast.

Fistral Beach hosts most of Cornwall's major surfing competitions throughout the year and is arguably the most famous beach - although main peaks can experience some crowding in good conditions. A unit of the British Surfing Association is based here and there are also a number of amenities - including a cafe, shop and equipment hire - nearby.

Experienced surfers staying in holiday cottages in Newquay can also try Little Fistral and South Fistral beach breaks - although the former has no lifeguard present and surfers should ensure they proceed with caution.

The two-mile stretch of coastline at Watergate Bay is also a popular place for surfers of all levels to ride the waves - you'll find there are surf schools here too if you need to brush up on your skills.

Of course, not all holidaymakers who come to Cornwall want to surf - if you prefer to enjoy the action from the shore, there are plenty of places to do exactly that.

The town beaches of Towan, Tolcarne, Lusty Glaze and Great Western are considerably more sheltered, with surfing restricted in some areas during the peak season. These beaches are brilliant for beginners, as well as families enjoying a relaxing holiday on the coast.
