The enchanting forts of Nizwa are a must-see in Oman

A trip to Oman offers those on luxury holidays the chance to see a wide range of buildings and monuments. However, there are perhaps none quite as intriguing as the astounding forts in Nizwa, where you'll be able to get an in-depth insight into the history of the Arabic country.

Constructed in the 17th century by Imam Sultan bin Saif al Yarubi, this fort played a crucial role in the numerous battles that took place in Oman around this era and its walls were specifically designed to be round in order to protect against mortar fire.

Inside the outer walls, you'll discover a wealth of corridors, false doors, secret passages and armoured staircases, all of which were built to make it extremely difficult for enemy invaders to break into. Of course, you won't be in as much danger when exploring the fort today as rebel forces would have been hundreds of years ago, but it's a good idea to go on a guided tour so you don't get lost!

Head to the summit of the central tower and you'll be able to take in magnificent views of the lush green countryside that surrounded the fort and see the cannons that were used to fire out at enemies.

Once you've finished exploring the fortress make sure you visit the nearby souk.

Here, you will be able to see expert craftsmen make beautiful souvenirs and purchase intricate silver jewellery. If you are lucky, you may even get to see the goat auction that takes place here every week and is conducted underneath a canopy of trees.
