European Rail has announced a new train route from St Pancras station in central London, all the way across Europe to Rome.

Legend holds St Pancras was born in the Italian capital, before being executed by decapitation at the age of 14 for his faith – so where more appropriate to head from London's newest station?

Beginning on the new hi-speed line, passengers will change at Paris and head for Geneva – before boarding a direct overnight train to Rome.

The organiser details: "Your private two-berth cabin is reserved so you can visit the restaurant for dinner as you speed through the Alps before settling down for the overnight trip."

Once in Rome the company also offers tours of Christian Rome, archaeological Rome and historic Rome before the return journey from Roma Termini.

The cost is from £776.80 per person based on two people sharing a twin or double room.
