Flybe and SAS ground flights - 13/09/07

The low cost airline Flybe and Scandinavian airline SAS have grounded several of their flights today following problems with one type of aircraft in their fleets.

Flybe cancelled over 30 flights today, equivalent to six per cent of its flying programme, including services from Norwich, Exeter, Glasgow and Edinburgh airports.

Four flights from Leeds Bradford and Southampton were also cancelled today.

"As a precautionary measure, Bombardier, the manufacturer of the Q400, one of the four types of aircraft operated by Flybe, this evening instructed all operators globally of this aircraft to carry out a further limited number of specific inspections to their fleet of Q400 aircraft. For Flybe this impacts only a limited number of our fleet," the airline said in a statement.

The cancellations follow an accident yesterday on an SAS flight from Denmark, which was forced to crash-land at Vilnius Airport in Lithuania. The plane was safely evacuated after landing.

SAS has cancelled over 100 flights today.
