Holidaymakers looking for the ultimate in luxury from their hotel can save over €6,000 (around £4,200) if they opt for Rome over Paris.

The average price of a Saturday night stay in the most expensive suite in a five-star luxury hotel in the Italian capital is €974 (£681), according to figures from The Wall Street Journal Europe.

By contrast the most expensive luxurious room in a Paris hotel reaches an average of €7,600 (£5,316) for the same night's stay.

Behind Paris came New York (€6,641/£4,645), Tokyo (€5,450/£3,812), London (€5,334/£3,731) and Hong Kong (€3,958/£2,768).

However, far cheaper was Germany's financial capital Frankfurt (€1,315/£920) and the Belgian capital Brussels (€1,150/£804), costing a third of their global counterparts for a night of pure luxury.
