Brits rate New York and Sydney above their own capital city as a global brand, new research shows.

The Big Apple scored highly for the vibrancy of its culture, its attractiveness as a holiday destination and the positive word-of-mouth recommendations given by those who have been there.

Second placed Sydney, Australia's largest city, scored well all round but suffered in the Leo Burnett world cities brand index when it came to perceptions about its culture.

London surprisingly came top when it came to the quality of its climate, and third on vibrancy of culture, but fared poorly when it came to word-of-mouth recommendations.

Fewer than 20 per cent of those questioned had heard good things about London, contributing to its overall third place.

The top ten cities also included Barcelona, Paris Rome, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Toronto and San Francisco.

Beirut, Lebanon, once dubbed the 'Paris of the Middle East', came bottom of the list of 50 cities.
