New Lonely Planet guide praises London's East End

Wednesday, 20 Feb 2008 10:06
The latest Lonely Planet guide to London has been released and the influential publication says east London has stolen the spotlight from the West End.

This is the sixth edition of the London LP and it heaps praise on regenerated areas in the East End, including Clerkenwell, Shoreditch and Spitalfields, which are described as the city's "most creative and exciting districts".

"Anyone interested in modern, multicultural London should visit the East End," the guide says, also mentioning "super cool" Hoxton Square and "fantastic" Brick Lane as places to be.

Author Steve Fallon commented: "A few years ago the West End had a lot of the draw cards for Londoners and visitors alike; now its position is being challenged on every level."

The book talks about the "resurgence of London's music scene, with new talent from the capital bubbling over after a surprisingly long post-Britpop lull".

London's eateries also attract praise with the "organic farmers' markets and cutting-edge restaurants" helping to make the city "one of the best places for a night out on the planet".
