Big Dance week in London

Tuesday, 24 Jun 2008 15:14
Big Dance 2008 - a celebration of dance in London - kicks off on Saturday July 5th, transforming the streets of London into a giant dance studio.

The climactic event of the nine-day festival will be the Big Dance in Trafalgar Square on July 12th that will see 2,008 Londoners take part.

Award-winning choreographer Aletta Collins was commissioned by the Arts Council England to create a new work that is set to be the world's largest dance.

See the Big Dance website for details of how to sign up for this exciting event and a video to help participants learn the steps.

"Dance is a magical way of stretching our imaginations as well as our bodies," explains Moira Sinclair, an executive director of Arts Council England.

"We are delighted to be supporting the programme and look forward to seeing everyone out enjoying themselves," she added.

London mayor Boris Johnson is apparently a "huge fan" of dance and said: "With Big Dance the idea is to show that anyone can join in and that it is a great social activity as well as being a healthy pursuit."

The festival is set to highlight London's international status as one of the great cities for dance.

Every major dance organisation in London is taking part with special commissions, performances, backstage visits and open rehearsals.
