Keira Knightley stars in Chatsworth film

Friday, 13 Jun 2008 17:23
Keira Knightley has brought to life the fascinating Georgiana, duchess of Devonshire in a major new film due to be released on September 5th 2008.

The Duchess was partly filmed at Chatsworth in Derbyshire, and a new exhibition will be launched at the house this summer featuring costumes from the film and portraits of the 18th century socialite.

Born into the Spencer family, Georgiana married the 5th Duke of Devonshire in 1774 and went on to bewitch and scandalise Georgian society with her compulsive gambling and sharing her husband with her best friend.

She also played a significant role in the politics of her day and the current duke of Devonshire commented that she was an integral "part of a society that revolved around parties and the politics that was done there".

"We hope that people who see the film will make the trip to Chatsworth to discover more about the woman that still holds our interest some 200 years after she died," he added.

An even bigger, permanent Georgiana exhibition is planned at Chatsworth for spring 2009, including a letter written in her own blood to her six-year-old son.

Other film locations in Derbyshire include Kedleston Hall and you can find details of other film-related displays and promotions in the region at www.visittheduchess.co.uk.
