British beachcombing weekend

British holidaymakers are being encouraged to enjoy exploring the UK's dramatic coastline this summer with the great British Beachcombing Weekend.
On July 25th to 27th 2008, the first ever official beachcombing weekend will take place around the country as people get involved with helping protect coastal marine life.
Beachcombing is simply wandering along the beach and searching for unusual objects - from semi-precious stones to drift wood, and from Costa Rican sea beans to shark egg cases.
The weekend is being promoted by marine charity the Shark Trust and cottages4you.co.uk.
People will be encouraged to log any finds of shark egg cases (also known as mermaid's purses) to help in the effort to conserve endangered skates and rays.
The empty egg cases that wash up on to beaches are a good source of information on the whereabouts of skate and ray nursery grounds.
"Beachcombing is a great way for people to learn more about our marine environment," says Shark Trust director of conservation Ali Hood.
"It can turn a simple walk on the beach into a real adventure."
Cottages4you.co.uk director Andrew Barningham notes that "with more families choosing to holiday in the UK this year, the weekend offers the perfect low cost excuse to explore the delights of Britain's coast during the school holidays, whatever the weather".
