The government has issued new advice to travellers visiting Fiji's capital Suva, warning against all but essential travel to the city.
"Following the tension between Republic of Fiji military forces and the government of Fiji, the Foreign Office has today amended its travel advice to include advice against all but essential travel to Suva," a Foreign Office statement said.
"The Fiji military commander has issued an ultimatum demanding that the government resign during November. On November 1st, the prime minister made it clear he would not resign. The Fiji military commander has been out of the country, but is expected back during the first week in November.
"The security situation in Suva could therefore deteriorate at short notice."
The Foreign Office is also warning holidaymakers to be cautious when travelling to any other part of Fiji, to avoid military or political rallies and large gatherings and to stay informed of the situation during their stay.
