Fiji travel warnings relaxed

The Foreign Office has relaxed its warnings for travellers visiting Fiji, advising holidaymakers they can now travel anywhere except the capital Suva.

Travellers had been advised to avoid all but essential travel across the island following a bloodless military coup in last month.

Warnings against all but essential travel to the capital, Suva, are still in place and visitors are being advised to register with the British High Commission when they arrive in Fiji.

"Although the security situation in Fiji is currently calm, it could deteriorate at short notice," the Foreign Office said in a statement.

"You should exercise caution when travelling to the rest of Fiji, particularly in urban areas," it advised.

"There is the potential for civil unrest following the military coup. You should avoid all military or political rallies and large gatherings of people."

The Foreign Office added travellers should stay informed of developments by regularly checking the latest travel advice, available from www.fco.gov.uk
