Tropical storm damage in Belize

Friday, 20 Jun 2008 17:16
Damage caused by torrential rainfall from tropical storm Arthur has prompted the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to issue a warning about travelling in Belize.

The FCO advises holidaymakers to "exercise caution" when travelling in the south of Belize - particularly in the districts of Stann Creek and Toledo.

A number of bridges have been washed-out and some places may only be accessible via temporary bridges, the FCO reports. Flooding has led to villages being evacuated.

Seven people have been reported dead and around 10,000 affected by the storm, which lashed the country in early June and saw up to ten inches of rain fall across Belize within a 36 hour period.

The Belize hurricane season usually runs from June to November.
