As Europe's Christmas markets get going, a leading travel website is reporting soaring bookings for German cities.
Lastminute.com reports bookings to Berlin are up 135 per cent on last year, and holidays to Cologne and Dusseldorf are up 145 per cent.
"It would seem that many football fans returned from the World Cup impressed with the welcome and service they received in Germany during the event.
"Combine this with the fact that there has been an incredible focus on the destination over the summer it has prompted many of our users to consider visiting the country's key cities in time for the Christmas market," said Lastminute.com travel director John Bevan.
As well as German cities, bookings for the French city of Lille, close to the Belgian border, are up 121 per cent compared to 12 months ago, with the chance to take the train proving popular.
Other cities in demand for Christmas breaks include Prague, Brussels, Venice and Budapest.
