New York is the British holidaymaker's top place to go for a New Year's Eve break, new research has revealed.

Online travel agent Opodo.co.uk finds the US city one of only two destinations in the top ten New Year's Eve holiday locations outside of Europe.

After New York, holidaymakers opted for the Czech capital Prague, followed by Paris and Vienna; showing a cold, crisp, and snowy New Year's Eve has proved more popular than escaping to warmer climes.

In fifth place was Barcelona, followed by Rome, Amsterdam and Berlin.

The Moroccan favourite Marrakech was in ninth place, with the German city of Munich taking tenth.

"It is interesting to note traditional New Year destinations such Sydney and Las Vegas have been usurped by some smaller European destinations such as Prague and Vienna," commented Caroline Noble, Opodo UK director.
