Huge fire at Universal Studios

Monday, 02 Jun 2008 16:50
A huge fire devastated Hollywood's Universal Studios yesterday, destroying a number of iconic sets on the studio's back lot.

Although the studio tour has been severely damaged, officials have assured the public the theme park and shopping centre will continue to be open for visitors as usual.

Sets destroyed by the fire include the King Kong exhibit with its 30-foot-tall moving model of the great ape, and the Back to the Future set, including the town square area with the famous clock tower.

The popular New York City streetscape set, which has featured in many films and television shows over the years, was another victim of the blaze.

Other losses included a soundstage and a number of video vaults containing archived footage from films and TV series.

It has been suggested that low water pressure in the fire protection system contributed to the extent of the damage, the Los Angeles Times reports.
