Crazy Horse largest sculpture in the world

Tuesday, 03 Jun 2008 11:40
A historic memorial to native American hero Crazy Horse is nearing completion some 60 years after work began on the sculpture - which is now said to be the largest in the world.

The giant mountain monument in South Dakota depicts the Lakota warrior who fought to preserve his tribe's culture in the nineteenth century.

Seated on horseback, the sculpture is significantly bigger than the Mount Rushmore monument, which is eight miles away.

Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski began the monument in June 1948 and other artists, including his widow Ruth, have continued the work since his death in 1982.

Carving on the face of Crazy Horse is now completed but there is still a long way to go.

The Crazy Horse memorial also includes an education and cultural centre honouring the living heritage of the North American Indian peoples.

There are also plans for a university and medical training centre to be built nearby.

Travellers can see the completed Crazy Horse sculpture with North American adventure travel company Trek America.

  • Sa'id bin Hussein must have had his head stuck in the SAND not to have heard of the Crazy Horse Memorial until just recently. Maybe that is why his head hurts so badly - boo-hoo! As to foreign invasions, perhaps bin Hussein could do well to ponder the massive invasions of Arabs/Muslims in past years when the Ottoman Empire was sprawling all over Europe with the avowed purpose of conquering and subduing as much of the world as possible and subjecting it to foreign occupation!

  • It hurts my heart to have just heard of the Crazy Horse memorial. This memorial is unlike any work of art in North America and yet it is no where near as well known as Mt Rushmore because the face is of an American, not of foreigners and white supremicists, which is what this country is built upon.

  • The Crazy Horse memorial is indeed an awesome sight to be seen. Photographs cannot do it justice; it is something that needs to be seen with your own eyes. I have been to the monument about four times in the past few years and while construction is moving at a slow pace - it is funded through donations and not by the government, i.e. Mount Rushmore - it is still an inspiration. Whoever goes to the Black Hills of South Dakota is encouraged to bypass Mount Rushmore and instead take in the Crazy Horse memorial.

Great, but how about putting some real Native sculptors to work on this during this depression? www.angelfire.com/nv/aragon
