The ultra-hip area of Nisantasi has long been one of the most desirable areas to stay in Istanbul, thanks to its haute couture shopping and great art.

After a day of splashing some cash on the likes of DKNY, Hugo Boss and Emporio Armani, or relaxing in trendy Turkish cafes, the holiday-making shopper needs a luxurious base to rest their weary feet.

The latest addition to one of Turkey's most fashionable areas is the Sofa Hotel, part of the Great Hotels Organisation.

Opened in spring 2006, the luxury hotel offers 12 suites and 82 guest rooms, which all benefit from a comprehensive 24-hour service and relaxing rain showers.

While there is a wealth of great dining experiences to be had in Istanbul, the Sofa comes with a well-recommended restaurant, Tuus, as well as the Café Sofa, which opens early and closes late.

The Patika Bookstore in the café provides the perfect hideaway for the travelling bookworm, thanks to its rich supply of rare book collections, as well as the latest news.

The health conscious are also well catered for, with the Taylife Spa Detox and Wellness centre, which offers yoga, relaxation classes, massages and detox.

In keeping with Nisantasi's reputation for being a hot-bed of artistic endeavour, the penthouse level of the hotel features Art*8, an exhibition centre showing off the works of Turkish and international artists, juxtaposed with a spectacular view of the city.

And when you have had your fill of indoor relaxation, you could head for the streets of Nisantasi. While not the biggest of areas, it is blessed with striking architecture and structures throughout.
