Estonia top destination for 2008

Tuesday, 14 Aug 2007 09:44
Estonia is set to see a surge in popularity among British holidaymakers in 2008, new research reveals.

Figures from travel website Opodo.co.uk find the Estonian capital of Talinn will be the hottest destination for 2008, followed by Accra in Ghana and Porto in Portugal.

Also in the top ten are old favourites such as Bangkok, Rome, Venice and Hong Kong, alongside other less well-established destinations such as the Romanian capital Bucharest and Manila in the Philippines. The southern Spanish city of Seville is also expected to become more popular next year, Opodo finds.

The availability of low-cost flights is a key reason for the popularity of European destinations in particular, Opodo reports, with increased flights from long-haul carriers also driving the popularity of more exotic places.

"Opodo believes that the rise in popularity of Manila is down to the increased awareness of holiday options in the Philippines. The majority of holidaymakers are flying into Manila and then on to a beach, diving, golf, heritage or wildlife holiday," the travel website explained.

"It would seem that Accra, once a little known cosmopolitan metropolis has now been discovered. Opodo is the only one of the big four online travel agencies to offer flights to Accra the capital of Ghana and this coupled with the marketing push of the destination has meant that they can support the growing demand of visitors."

Opodo top ten destinations for 2008

2. Accra, Ghana
3. Porto, Portugal
4. Rome, Italy
5. Manila, Philippines
6. Bangkok, Thailand
7. Bucharest, Romania
