The islands of Malta may be best known for their summer weather, great beaches and the spectacular city of Valletta, but they are also an excellent active holiday destination.

Located close to the Italian island of Sicily, between Europe and north Africa in the Mediterranean, Malta has clear waters ideal for diving holidays, rugged coastlines for thrill-seeking climbers, and plenty of opportunities to explore the country's great outdoors on foot or two wheels.

Among the tour operators with active holidays in Malta is Chevron Air Holidays, which has put together its late summer holiday breaks on the islands, whether you want to dive, climb, walk or go cycling.

Scuba diving holidays in Malta
Holidaymakers with a passion for scuba diving are offered a wide range of underwater adventures off the coasts of the Malta archipelago, as well as being able take advantage of some of the Mediterranean's clearest waters.

Dive sites include wrecks of warships, caves and reefs. However, for holidaymakers looking to try a more unusual and challenging dive, it is possible to try night diving or deep-sea diving to as far as 20 to 40 metres below surface level on the islands.

Chevron Air Holidays has an August seven-night half-board stays at the four-star Maritim Antonine Hotel and Spa in Mellieha Bay, close to several Malta diving schools, from £404.

Other tour operators with Malta diving holidays include Regal Dive and Belleair.

Cycling, walking and climbing holidays in Malta
For holidaymakers who prefer their active breaks to be on land, Malta's coastline can be enjoyed with a rock climbing, walking or cycling holiday.

There are more than 1,300 routes where it is possible to go climbing across the Maltese islands, each of which is graded by its toughness.

The more rural island of Gozo offers some of the best routes for climbers, hikers and cyclists, as well as the north-west coast of the main island of Malta.

Seven nights at the four-star St Patrick's Hotel in Gozo with breakfast starts from £376 in August.
