British holidaymakers are flocking to the destinations with the hottest, sunniest weather, a leading travel website reveals.

Lastminute.com finds Greece is the most popular summer holiday destination this summer, followed by Egypt, Spain and Turkey.

The website believes the rainy summer weather is making Brits head for the scorching hot weather of southern Europe and north Africa.

It is the first time in the last year Greece has overtaken Egypt as the most popular destination.

"Brits are desperate to escape," commented John Bevan, UK managing director of Lastminute.

"We have witnessed an increase in traffic of 12 per cent week on week and an increase in holiday bookings of up to 15 per cent over the last few days."
