The best known of the Czech Republic's ancient spa towns is Karlovy Vary, or Carlsbad.
The ancient town has the largest spa in the country, which dates back to 1350.
Since then the tradition of Czech spas have become ingrained in European culture, with travellers visiting the springs not only for their curative resources, but to relax and get away from their everyday stress.
To this day, a trip to Karlovy Vary offers holidaymakers a chance to sample the healing powers of the spa water as well as enjoy the architecture surrounding the spa.
There are a total of 12 springs in the town that differ in temperature and the amount of carbon dioxide they contain, which is also why their healing qualities also vary.
The hottest spring, also considered to have the strongest healing power, rises from a depth of 2,000 to 3,000 metres underground, and is known to reach 73 degrees on its journey. The temperature of the other naturally hot springs is around 40 degrees.
Another key sight in Karlovy Vary is the town's colonnades. The most impressive of these is the 132 metre long Mill Colonade that has 124 tall columns running alongside five of the spa's 12 springs.
Other sights in the town include the Orchard Colonnade, an ornate white, Viennese-designed structure that surrounds the park spring.
However, Karlovy Vary's appeal as a place to relax is not just down to its architecture – the town’s green, hilly surroundings also add to its peaceful qualities.
Hikers can explore the100-kilometre network of forest paths surrounding Karlovy Vary, which have gazebos, resting-places, benches and lookout towers. The paths are all clearly marked and for over a century have been used as part of the relaxing spa experience.
