Europe's first funicular cableway system which will take people from the city centre shops to the top of the mountain will open on December 1st in Innsbruck, Austria.

Visitors will be able to travel from the city centre to the peak of Hafelekar Mountain in 20 minutes.

The new Nordkettenbahn funicular links up with a cable car at Hungerburg station, giving visitors the further option of riding right the way up to 2,269 metres.

The spectacularly futuristic appearance of the four city centre stations for the funicular's link with the gondola is the work of London-based architect Zaha Hadid.

The new rail and gondola link up the Seegrube will make Innsbruck's Nordkette mountain region accessible both in winter and in summer.

For more information on visiting the region see the official Innsbruck website.
