The tropical, clear waters of Trinidad & Tobago, with its large variety of wildlife and protected rainforest make it an ideal place for an adventure holiday.

If you really want to get into the thick of it, or just want to experience the islands on a budget, then why not try your hand at camping – Caribbean style.

Trinidad has four recommended campsites - Chagville on its western shore, Maracas in the north, Manzanilla and Mayaro on the east coast and Columbus Bay to the south.

Most beach campsites have facilities such as picnic tables and benches, a secure car park, changing rooms with showers, toilet facilities, lockers, beach bars and cafeterias.

But if you really want to get away from your fellow man, then head to Tobago, which has a relaxed approach to camping on most of its beaches, so you can just pitch your tent where it suits you.

The only thing you are advised to worry about is ensuring you leave the beach the way you found it.

If beach camping is not adventurous enough, then head out to Tobago's dense rain forest, though this is only recommended with an experienced guide whose CV includes dealing with snakes and other wild animals.

There are many different hiking experiences to be had across Tobago's rainforest, from extremely challenging overnight treks to gentle walks taking in some of the wildlife and scenery.

One of the highlights of any walk is finding somewhere to take a dip and enjoy the tropical water.

One such hike is a visit to Argyle Waterfall, an easy trek that rewards visitors with a cooling swim under the waterfall itself.

For a more challenging walk, you can try a day-long trek along Tobago's north coast, starting at Castara going via Englishman's Bay to the sleepy village of Charlotteville, a trail that lets you see the island's large bird population and other wildlife.

More trails can be found at the Main Forest Ridge, one of the world's oldest rain forest reserves.
