Caution urged for Dominican Republic holidaymakers

Holidaymakers visiting the Dominican Republic are urged to "exercise caution" following the tropical storm which hit the Caribbean island last week.
The Foreign Office explains the main tourist centres were not affected by tropical storm Noel, but anyone planning to travel across the country's interior should take into account that some roads are susceptible to flash flooding or landslides.
"Tropical Storm Noel recently passed through the Dominican Republic causing a number of deaths and injuries with more than 50,000 people affected by being cut off or displaced," the Foreign Office stated.
It added: "Most visits to the Dominican Republic are trouble-free. The main type of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in 2006 was for replacing lost passports. Crime against tourists is rare but care should be exercised in isolated areas especially at night."
