Thai-Cambodian dispute over Preah Vihear temple

Tuesday, 01 Jul 2008 17:41
A long-running dispute over the ownership of the 11th-century Preah Vihear temple near the border between Thailand and Cambodia has flared up again over a Unesco world heritage site bid.

The World Court ruled the ancient Hindu temple is in Cambodian territory in 1962 but in 2003 Thai objections led to rioting in Phnom Penh and the burning of the Thai embassy.

Now Thailand has refused to endorse Cambodia's application to have the temple declared a world heritage site.

And Thai protestors have prompted the Cambodian government to close the temple, the AFP news agency reports.

Although the temple is in Cambodia, it is most easily accessed from Thailand and the Cambodians believe the Thai government blocked a previous Unesco application last year.

  • Cambodia claimed ownership of Preah Vihear temple since 1962, and most recently we won the the UNISCO deal eventhough Thailand did't agree with it. The only reason that Thailand object the temple deal is that they afraid that Cambodia might want to claim all of Khmer's provinces in Thailand that the culprit Thais stole from us in the near future. I want the whole world to know that Thais steal and rob lands. THAT IS THE FACT. Right now the Thai government probably working on ways to protect the Khmer's provinces from Khmers.
