Two bombs exploded in Colombo, Sri Lanka's biggest city, killing one person and injuring ten others yesterday, the Foreign Office is reporting.
The attack, which killed a government minister, comes after deteriorating relations between the government and the Tamil Tiger rebel group.
However, holidaymakers are not being advised to avoid the city despite the increased terrorist activity, though the Foreign Office does warn travellers of a "high threat from terrorism".
It reported: "Attacks can be indiscriminate, and have occurred in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.
"On January 8th 2008 a bomb explosion on the road between Colombo's international airport the city centre resulted in the death of a Sri Lankan government minister and injuries to at least ten other people.
"Later the same day a bomb exploded in central Colombo, there were no reported casualties."
Holidaymakers are also advised to ensure they have identification with them at all times, as heightened security checks are in operation and detentions have taken place.
