The Singapore Formula One grand prix has been given "in-principle" approval by the sport's governing body.
The race is planned to take place at night, making it the first night race in Formula One's history.
"The in-principle approval by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) for Singapore to host a night race is yet another positive step in our preparations to present to the world a truly unique Formula One race," commented Mr Lim Neo Chian, of the Singapore Tourism Board.
"Subject to final safety approvals, Formula One fans worldwide will be able to enjoy a race experience like no other in Singapore from next year - a dramatic night street race set against our beautiful city skyline."
Mr Lim Neo Chian added the night race had already had two positive lighting tests so far, and plans to hold the race at night were "on track".
